Greetings,
It's
hard to call this season "Summer" with all the drizzle and
gloomy skies. Hopefully soon we'll be rid of this oppressive
gray weather. Oh well, for those of us living in S.
California, there's still lots to be grateful for. But I must
admit I've been finding it difficult to be motivated. Some
days its so damp I'm tempted to make a fire in the hearth
except all the Winter supplies have been put away! Think I'll
go snuggle with a good book and my doggies.
Recently I
added NEW items on my webstore,
including Basketweaving Kits! There's 4 to choose from.
The kits include all that you need to make the basket taught
on my DVD "Basketweaving
Essentials with Nadine Spier." Kits include a mounted
cabachon, complimentary colored Irish linen thread and beads,
clean pine needles and a sewing needle.

I was reading in Craft Arts International an article
entitled "Tai Chi in Metal" about a silversmith Wayne Meeten
who creates extraordinarily beautiful vessels. The first
paragraph really caught my interest. The interviewer states
Meeten's "work really does come alive, conveying sensations of
serenity and movement. He achieves this by looking beyond a
fundamental mastery of the metal, instead seeking to
understand it and work in harmony with his materials." In his
quest to perfect technique, Meeten moved to Japan to study
with traditional masters, one a Japanese National Treasure.
One master taught him to "slow down and listen to the work,
stop trying to run. If you make a mistake, ask the metal
whether it wants to be repaired or whether it wants to become
something different. It's alive. It will tell you." I thought
that was extraordinary advice and felt worth passing along to
my students.
I have several classes coming up this
Summer including Pine Needle Basketry being hosted in private
homes in Seal Beach and Vista. My complete class schedule is
listed below. Hope to see you in one of my classes. Happy
weaving, and let's hope for Sun!
Nadine
