In the depths of Winter I finally learned there was in me an invincible Summer.

Greetings,

Yesterday we had an event at home that was a big reminder how fragile and precious life is.  My husband turned on the Jacuzzi and after a while realized it wasn't heating up. So he stuck his head in the pool shed to investigate. Suddenly the propane fumes that had collected in the shed ignited and a ball of flame exploded, sending him flying backwards.  I was in the house peacefully oblivious to all of this. He came rushing in looking like a white Irish version of Buckwheat from the Little Rascals - his full head of hair sticking straight out, still smoking and smoldering.  His eyelashes were cooked off, as well as some of his eyebrows. Fortunately that was the extent of his "injuries."  But it was one of life's little reminders that life is a tenuous gift and how important it is to treasure each day and each other.

I have a couple announcements to make:

My brand new website is now on-line! I'm excited about the new, clean look. My web designer, Susan Roberts, worked hard to create a website that represented me and my work in a fresh, new way.  Feel free to check it out!  www.nadinespier.com

Also, one of my vessels was published in the Winter issue of Fiber Art Now magazine.   This is a wonderful magazine promoting all forms of fiber art - felting, rug hooking, basketry, knitting, weaving, spinning, and more.  http://fiberartnow.net/

Recently I started selling all 3 of my DVD's on www.Amazon.com. My first DVD has a lot of wonderful reviews, but I could use some reviews on my Advanced Basketweaving and Creating with Lavender DVD's. If you've watched either of those, I would really appreciate if you could take a moment and write a review. A big thank you to anybody who does this!

Blessings to everyone,
Nadine

SAN DIEGO'S CRAFT REVOLUTION

FROM POST-WAR MODERN TO CALIFORNIA DESIGN

Through Apr 15, 2012

This original exhibition documents a fascinating, inspiring and overlooked chapter of San Diego's recent past: The important contribution of San Diego craftsmen from the postwar period beginning in the 1940s up through the 1970s. The exhibit explores the progression from sleek modernism to unconventional handmade objects of use such as furniture, doors, jewelry and ceramics. Over 60 artists will be featured in the show, including Toza and Ruth Radakovich, Rhoda Lopez, Jack Hopkins, Arline Fisch, Martha Longenecker, Ellamarie and Jackson Woolley, Larry Hunter, Kay Whitcomb and James Hubbell. Many of these San Diego-based artists received national attention and participated in major Los Angeles exhibitions, including the California Design series held in Pasadena and Los Angeles.

This exhibition is part of Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945-1980. This unprecedented collaboration, initiated by the Getty Foundation, brings together more than sixty cultural institutions from across Southern California for six months beginning October 2011 to tell the story of the birth of the Los Angeles art scene and how it became a major new force in the art world.

Classes

BEGINNING PINE NEEDLE

BASKET WEAVING

In this introductory class students will start a pine needle basket around a polished stone cabochon. The swirling stitch is taught with a unique method that lines up stitches on both sides of the basket, making the vessel attractive on the inside as well as the outside. Students also learn how to shape their basket and how to taper down and finish the final coil. The coiling method can later be used to weave other plant materials including sweetgrass, palm inflorescence and leaves from a wide variety of common plants.

Repeat students are invited to attend to learn more advanced techniques as time permits. Instructional fees vary according to facility.

NADINE'S HOME STUDIO WORKSHOPS

The home workshops are kept small to provide a generous amount of individual instruction tailored to each student's skill level and interest such as: Learning how to coil a basket, or for more experienced students, shaping of vessels, novel starts such as walnut slices or other objects with holes, fancy stitches (wheat stitch, diamond stitch, fern stitch, inserting beads between coils using the mariposa stitch) handles, teneriffe, lidded vessels, sculptural techniques, and much more!

Both beginning and experienced basket weavers are welcome.
Show 'n Share is a fun part of the workshop, so please bring any baskets you've made to share with the group.

Since enrollment is kept small, early registration is recommended. Email Nadine  info@nadinespier.com to verify there's an opening, then send a check with a note specifying which class date you want to attend. Students are welcome to bring their own materials (pine needles must be washed and dried) or a started basket; supplies are always available for purchase in class.
